Last Friday we celebrated our 44th wedding
anniversary.
It’s hard to believe there was a day when hair grew
better on top of the head than on the chin and cheeks. And, it was hard to
believe that we envisioned celebrating our 44th wedding anniversary
as we did and where we were when we married in Telluride, CO in 1969. Let’s
see, yesterday we washed all the
windows, both inside and outside in both the motor home and the car, we checked
the level of toilet paper in the bathrooms several times, we went for a hike on
one of the trails, and then we engaged in a meal at Caledonia’s one “supper
club.” Romantic ambiance was not the
forte of the supper club. It was a few miles out in the country and housed in a
Quonset hut, but there were cars in the parking lot and so we felt safe
venturing inside. The menu consisted of rural MN cuisine. There was a bread
basket and relish tray initially served in plastic baskets similar to what one
gets in a drive in restaurant when ordering the combo meal, and the meal was very reasonably priced but credit cards were not accepted. The meal did
include a free, complimentary dish of grasshopper ice cream. They pulled out
all the stops for us.
Anniversaries are good times to reminisce. We did not
realize on that fateful day we would experience our first motor home. I had to
push Shannon around Telluride in a wheel barrow in order to get to my car that
was mysteriously parked in and unavailable. Oh, well, the gas mileage was
better than what I get now. Back at camp, there was a campfire program where
the speaker told Native American stories about the animals found in the park.
All in all the day turned out to be memorable. After 44 years, we are still in
love, still best friends, still in good health, and homeless. Three out of four
ain’t too bad after all these years.
