Today was scheduled our first day on the job, an orientation. The volunteer coordinator didn't work today, and when we showed up at the VC and introduced ourselves and told everyone we were scheduled for orientation, they looked like deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming train. So, we sat in the auditorium for a couple of hours watching some of the videos that are available. When we got tired of watching videos, we did bump into the director and he showed us where our uniforms were. We spent an hour trying on pants and shirts and decided that a vest would be best. (Volunteers wear the green pants and shirts of the USFS staff. They look like staff. We in our vests, however, will look like volunteers.) Tomorrow the volunteer coordinator will be working, and we expect a little more of an orientation. Our initial impression is that the USFS is even more laid back than the USF&WS.

There are a ton of hiking trails around the VC. So, as part of our orientation we decided we needed to become more familiar with the trails. Last night it was a hike to the Spouting Horn; today it was a hike to Devil's Churn.

I think all volunteers should be required to wear green ties. We need to gentrify the USFS a little. TB/BP
